Home/Front an online exhibition at Shoebox Projects

Curated by Kristine Schomaker

“Home/Front” is an online exhibition originally conceived as a physical show curated by Kristine Schomaker. Because we are now confined to our homes for our own safety, the exhibition is even more relevant.

“Home/Front” is a collection of artists who use everyday objects as the medium, subject and narrative in their work. The works I have curated are clever, political, illusionistic, witty, radiant, meaningful, somber and range from sculpture, to installation; photography to collage.

Ever since Duchamp, Oppenheim, Rauschenberg, Johns, Warhol and Keinholz, artists have used found and everyday objects in their work to tell their stories.

Kristine relates, “When I was a kid, I took a glass Pepsi bottle, peeled off the foam label, put the curled up label inside the empty bottle and called it ‘pop art.’ I have always had a fascination with the art of the every day.”

The artists featured in this exhibition are brought together through their brilliant use of turning the mundane into something beautiful, profound, thought provoking. These artists use items such as a hose or cell phone; chair or mattress; business suit, Lego or pipe cleaner; glass bowl, Tupperware cup, zipper, spoon or even toilet paper and create a story, political act or experience.

Please join us for the opening reception via Zoom on Saturday May 2nd 3-5pm. Info in the Facebook event.
