Clovis Blackwell: “Emanations: The Guardian Angel & the Terror of the Deep (i.e., When Do I Learn to Let Go?)”
Artist Talk and Opening Reception April 3,2021 from 3 to 4 PM PST Zoom Meeting ID: 854 1900 0255 Passcode: Postcard
The Guardian Angel and The Terror of the Deep are cultural manifestations of comfort and fear, a protector to watch over us through life’s uncertainties in opposition to the lurking dangers of the unknown. Blackwell draws on images that were formative in in development as a child to begin this body of work. With each print in these series, there is an “unfolding” of the imagery used. Initially this leads to inkblot-like abstractions, where the viewer may connect to their own unconscious to “see” different objects or figures within the work. However, as the layers continue to unfold, the work progresses toward kaleidoscopic patterns reminiscent of the mandala. This progression mirrors the artist’s personal journey of transformation—an attempt to shake off the assumptions that impede growth.
