In Silent Bells, each knitted and crocheted piece serves as a visual symphony, echoing the joyful melodies that danced through my mind as I engaged with the yarn. The act of creating these artworks is akin to composing music; each stitch is a note, each color a chord, harmonizing to create a rich tapestry of emotion and experience.

The title, Silent Bells, speaks to the resonance of creativity—though the pieces are mute, they vibrate with the energy of sound and memory. As I manipulated the fibers, I envisioned the bells ringing softly in celebration, their melodies weaving through the air like threads connecting moments of joy, nostalgia, and reflection.

This exhibition invites viewers to explore the interplay between texture and sound. The intricate patterns and vibrant hues reflect not only the tunes that inspired them but also the stories woven into the fabric of our lives. Each artwork is a dialogue, an invitation to listen closely to the silent music within the fibers, encouraging a meditative engagement that transcends the visual.

I hope that as you look closely at each artwork in this series, you find yourself resonating with the rhythms of your own memories, recognizing the universal language of joy that binds us all together. Through these tactile creations, may you hear the silent bells ringing in your heart, reminding you of the beauty found in both creation and connection.

Biography
Darlyn Susan Yee is a Los Angeles-based artist whose practice weaves together traditional and unexpected materials into complex designs that engage a dialogue between art, design and craft. Her meticulous, labor-intensive processes result in fiber-based sculptures and installations. She engages a dialogue that crosses cultural understandings of identity, gender and place. Complex, but with a sense of whimsy, Darlyn’s explorations of presence and containment encompass large installations to small handheld vessels.
Darlyn’s artwork has been shown internationally in museums and galleries, and has garnered numerous awards. She was included in 100 Artists of the West Coast II by Schiffer Books, the publisher of her book Macramé Today: Contemporary Knotting Projects. Her work is featured in numerous private and public collections.

I am present in my art, now and forever. I become one with my art by tracing and printing my body on canvas, marking my existence, where creation is both a necessity and an act of liberation.

Although I carry the weight of a traumatic past—marked by war, displacement, and personal loss—my art is not derived from pain, but from the need to survive through art.

My process is driven by an infinite desire to create, each work is a testament to the freedom I find in art. I am my truest, most free self, exploring new dimensions where no boundaries limit my self-expression.

I found myself performing through my process, along with the act of painting, using my body as a vessel to show resilience and perseverance of the soul. My body is the core to my technique—it is both the subject and tool of creation. I trace and imprint my form directly onto the canvas, merging myself with the work, so that my presence is eternally embedded within it.

I cut and tear the canvas and find new dimensions and layers to reflect my fragmented past, and then sew it back together as a metaphor for healing. Through my art and performance, I am present.

Through performance, I physically enact my survival, my emotions, and my presence in the world. This act of performing in my art allows me to fully inhabit the space I create, making each piece a living embodiment of my existence.
