Everyone has their own memories about their high school experience. I was not particularly happy at that time in my life. I was anxious, shy, and uncomfortable in my own skin. I always felt unable to meet the expectations that were requirements for being socially successful in high school. I was not bullied or teased; I was just not paid attention to. With this project, I have revisited that time in high school from the point of view of where I am now. Some of these portraits are from my own senior year yearbook and others I randomly selected from the internet. I have history with a few of the people I painted and most of them I never knew. They are not nostalgic pictures nor do they demonize the people portrayed. By looking at them objectively in that way, I can view them from where I sit now and realize I have progressed. I have changed and grown. Whether or not they have, I don’t know and it does not matter. I am able to see that they were just kids, just like me, with the same fears and insecurities that I had. I can affirm that my journey is taking me in the direction I need to travel. I hope that the viewer can look at these paintings and review their own journey since that time and whether it’s where they want to be going.

Lynn Heinz is an artist living and working at the Brewery Artist Complex in Los Angeles. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA and studied figure drawing under Charles White through Otis Art Institute.
She has been included in shows at Coastline Community College, Lancaster Museum of Art and History/Cedar, Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, Shoebox Projects LA, Shockboxx Projects, LA Artcore and Gallery 825. Her work is collected nationally.
