When the Eaton Fire destroyed Emily Araújo’s studio and thirty years of artwork in a single day, the Los Angeles-based artist faced a crossroads that would define her next chapter. Rather than retreat, Araújo chose to create—producing an entire body of new work that transforms catastrophic loss into layered investigations of memory, resilience, and renewal.
Her latest paintings, created entirely post-fire, explore her lifelong fascination with storms through water media that mirrors their “slippery, uncontrollable” nature. Working with transparent layers that reveal the strata of different painting days, Araújo has developed a visual language for impermanence and recovery. “Having lost a great deal,” she explains, “it is as if I didn’t want anything else to get lost.”
Araújo’s current solo exhibition “The Unknown” at Shoebox Arts represents more than artistic comeback—it’s a meditation on what emerges when we’re forced to start over. Drawing from childhood memories of typhoons in Hong Kong and the otherworldly atmosphere before Connecticut thunderstorms, her work speaks to universal experiences of upheaval and the human capacity to create meaning from chaos.
With over thirty years of exhibition history and an MFA from Carnegie Mellon, Araújo demonstrates that sometimes the most profound art comes not from comfort, but from the urgency of having nothing left to lose.
